There are still two rooms available in the Lodge if you wish to stay the night and the Ponderosa cabin is also still available at this time.

When you're at the Dance, make sure to take a look at the new Clubhouse colors. Most of the beams, ceiling and walls around the band area have already been painted. Also, Jim has installed the new ceiling fan to make it more comfortable during the winter.

The sponsors of the February 18 Dance already have most of the preparations done, but they have a personal issue and can't do it.

So, we're looking for a sponsor. The band, Cruizin' Kats, is already arranged and party favors and gifts have been purchased, so the sponsors only have to just arrange the Clubhouse and act as hosts.

This Weekend at Mountain Air Ranch

Despite a couple of inches of snow this week (followed by 50 degree weather), it will be a little busy at the Ranch this weekend. The Lodge and Ponderosa are rented out, there are two parties Saturday at the Clubhouse, and a remodeling session will be underway all weekend.

On Saturday, there will be a party at 2pm in the Clubhouse in celebration of the recovery of one of our 15-year-old members from a life-threatening illness before Christmas.

At 6pm, there will be an impromptu pot luck upstairs during the Bronco-Patriot Football game. All are invited and please bring something to share. We now have a wide screen LCD TV in the Clubhouse for these types of events, courtesy of Karen and Dan.

Starting around noon on Saturday, and continuing Sunday and Monday, we will once again have use of the power lift to continue refinishing work on the high ceilings in the Clubhouse. We may be able to get the lower walls finished also. The popcorn ceiling has been completed and painted, so have the walls remain to be painted and the beams remain to paint. Anyone with painting desire/experience is invited to help.

Road Conditions for New Year's Eve

As of yesterday (Wednesday), Deer Creek Canyon Road was ice/snow free and dry. Murphy Gulch Road was also dry and clear.

Mica Mine Gulch Road has snow pack at the bottom of the road but is 90% clear on Ranch property. Two-wheel drive vehicles should have no problems. The road at the Office, where some two wheel drives can have troubles during snow, is clear and just a little wet.

With temperatures yesterday at 50 degrees at the Clubhouse, and a forecast of 60 degrees today, the snow and ice will continue to melt.

The hiking trails on the Ranch have up to 2 feet of snow in shaded areas.

Bob L. has designed and programmed trail markers for MAR’s extensive network of hiking trails and set posts for them. They are being produced from durable and recyclable material similar to signs by the poolside.

In order to raise additional funds for our water improvement project please consider sponsoring a trail marker for yourself or a loved one. Any size donations will be gratefully accepted. All donations will be recognized on a plaque in the office. If you donate $ 100 or more a trail marker will be named for you or a loved one with your name (or a loved one’s name) on the trail post. Plea For Help

As you may know, the Ranch had to upgrade its water system due to State Health Department regulations. We previously had problems with surface water infringement on our well system and the new water system will guarantee that the drinking/showering/cooking water remains safe, now matter what.

That project is underway and will probably complete ahead of schedule and that presents a problem for Mountain Air Ranch. We are short about $30,000 right now to complete payments on the system.

So we are looking to the membership for loans, if you can help out. We have already taken out about $40,000 in loans at 3% on terms from 5 years to 15 years. We are offering the same terms to anyone who can help us out. As one member noted, this rate is about ten times more than a competitive money market rate.

If we can get this money loaned to the Ranch, we will be able to hold next year's membership rates at the same level, and also avoid a special assessment to the membership to pay for the water project.

New Year's Eve Dinner and Dance and New Year's Day Breakfast

Its not too early to start planning your New Year's celebration. Kathy and Ken, and Chris and Gary are sponsoring the Dance at 8pm. Tracy is doing the New Year's Eve Dinner. The theme for both the Dinner and Dance is "Midnight in Paris". At 8:30am January 1st, Tim/Karen and Steve/Connie will be offering a breakfast/brunch to the surivivors.

Lodging at the Ranch is fully booked with a waitlist of 5 couples for available rooms, but the Ranch Management is working on ideas for additional rooms.

Thanksgiving Dinner and Dance Success!

75 members joined us last night for a great Thanksgiving dinner prepared by Kathy P, Tracy, Karen S, Connie B, and Melissa S. Bill P, Tom and Marilyn and Jean Cz.

The Thanksgiving Dance was also a success with more than 65 people attending. Decorations by Anton and Caryn were in place and music was provided by Mid-Life Crisis. The dance ran from 8pm to midnight.

Construction Updates

The digging at Mountain Air Ranch is over. The new pipelines for our upgraded water system are now buried 8 feet under rock and dirt and the chlorination and filtration systems are about to be installed. Soon, you will notice a new shed at the hairpin turn between the Clubhouse and Lodge and a small shed by the Cedar cabin that house these systems.

New trailer sites are also appearing. The digging for the water system allowed a new site to be leveled out above the Clubhouse, near the water storage tanks. This is a particularly nice site, with a good view of the valley. The power line wiring is already in place.

The Clubhouse remodeling is proceeding. Sample paint colors were applied on the upstairs balcony to evaluate the colors that the Interior Decorator recommended.

Clubhouse Remodeling Update

Everyone coming to the Thanksgiving Dinner and Dance next weekend will notice some major changes in the upstairs Clubhouse.

You may have noticed the new window previously, but since then volunteers have put in over 300 hours of work so far, fixing and updating the upstairs.

As of today, all the old dark brown paint/stain is covered with new primer, ready for the final painting. The new drywall around the new windows is installed, jointed, and mostly primed, ready for painting. Broken moulding has been replaced, staples and nails removed, holes filled and sanded, stairway cleaned and primed, and fireplace stonework has been cleaned of 40 years of soot. The overhead has been enclosed with a new wall and the heating ducts are being rerouted. New lighting is also being installed.

The vaulted ceiling has had the fake beams removed and the drywall seams and nailheads covered with joint compound and some priming applied, ready for the real paint.

We're taking a three week break and will start again on December 3rd. All volunteers are welcome and there is plenty of work to go around. There's probably still about 200 hours of work still to do. And if you have drywall mudding experience and aren't afraid of heights, we REALLY need you.

Water System Construction

Just a heads-up: Construction is underway on a new water pipeline from our water storage tanks above the Clubhouse to the well-head by the Clubhouse bathrooms. This is an 8 foot deep trench running over 300 feet and crossing the parking lot just next to the Clubhouse.

The Clubhouse door between the bathrooms is blocked by this construction, but you can still get into the Clubhouse from the pool deck or the upstairs doors. The pool and hot tub are still open and unaffected by this construction. Water service in the Clubhouse is still coming in via the old (LEAKY!) water pipe.

Most of the parking lot is unaffected.

This trench should be filled later on Saturday, Nov 12, but will probably be a little soft for parking until we get gravel placed over the dig area.

Vehicle access to the golf cart parking area above the clubhouse and to the 6 seasonal trailer sites above the Clubhouse is only via the road above the Adam and Eve bathrooms.

Once digging is done, new water filtration and chlorination systems will be installed in 5 foot by 5 foot sheds by the Clubhouse, at the hairpin turn below the parking area, at the Ponderosa cabin and at the Cedar cabin. There will also be a water system installed in the basement behind the Ranch office.

clubs during the week, things were quiet. The 90-plus

sunbeds, neatly arranged around the sizeable warm pool, gave

a clue that weekends would be different. What struck us immediately

was the large playground by the pool--something we had only ever

seen once before at a US nudist resort…kids really are

welcome! Our experience at many US nudist resorts is that

they portray themselves as "family" oriented but make little

effort to encourage families or children. Not so at MAR. No

Park Model Sites Available at Colorado's Finest Nudist Resort

Mountain Air Ranch Family Nudist Resort is offering 6 sites for Park Models to any interested members or would-be members. These 6 select sites offer electricity and sewer service, with water service provided to your storage tank by a commercial service. Each site can hold up to a 399 square foot Park Model home with space for parking and site-holder-installed deck/patio. Meteor Shower This Weekend

According to a National Geographic article, this weekend may be a particularly good weekend to watch the skies at night. According to NASA, up to 600 meteors per hour (that's one every 6 seconds) should be streaking over our skies. That makes this weekend one of the better meteor showers of the year.

At 7060 feet, the MAR Clubhouse and pool deck should be a prime viewing area. We are sheltered from the lights of Denver by the Dakota Hogback, an uplifted sandstone ridge, so the night sky is easily viewable. We are supposed to have cloudy skies Friday and Saturday night, but by Sunday night, viewing should be good.

The pool is still open and heated to 84 degrees and the hot tub is at 104 degrees. The Clubhouse has a new 55 inch LCD Television with DirectTV service that includes free premium movie channels (at least free for the next couple of months).

Auction Update

After all donations were counted, the 2011 auction fund raiser brought in over

$18,000. Thanks to all who generously donated money, effort or made purchases on behalf of

this year’s cause. As stated before the auction, funds were being raised to update the upstairs of the clubhouse. Priorities were:

New flooring,
Painting,
Ventilation

Current status is as follows:

Windows for the west side have been purchased and are being installed currently. A swamp cooler and ductwork is planned to be installed in the attic and quotes are being obtained. Andy (Andy and Meredith) has offered to provide window shades which can go on when the windows installation is complete.

We have a quote on painting but are waiting for the windows and ductwork before proceeding. Also Jim (our new manager) is looking to install recessed lighting and painting would follow. We will need volunteers to help pull staples and nails from

the walls.

Flooring will be the last item and will go in after painting is complete. I am still investigating the best option for flooring. It will be a laminate, easy to clean and waterproof. Several members have made suggestions on the product to use and it is being evaluated.

If there is additional money left after the above items, it will be used to further enhance the upstairs clubhouse. Many suggestions have been made. It will of course depend on how far the money will go.

Clarification on Cell Phone Use And Verizon Cell Phone Coverage Improvements

The most recent newsletter implied that cell phones are not allowed on MAR grounds. This is not true.

The misunderstanding is that CAMERA USE is not allowed on MAR grounds without permission from the Manager and many cell phones have cameras.

An upcoming change to the Standards of Conduct will address cell phone use around the pool area (phone conversations must be moved away from the pool area) and cell phone ringers must be turned off around the pool

On an upbeat side, Verizon cell phone users will find that their cell phones work at the Lodge, near the payphone at the Clubhouse and, in the near future, at the Ranch office. This is made possible by a donation from a member of three Verizon Network Extenders, that act like minature cell phone towers and allow phones within 40 feet to make Verizon calls.

Bicycle Event (and traffic problems) this Sunday, August 21st

This Sunday, August 21st, there will be a Bicycle event on Deer Creek Canyon Road. Like last year, this event will cause traffic problems along Deer Creek Canyon Road, and auto traffic may be limited to "local access only".

If you are coming to the Ranch, you can expect that Sheriff's deputies will just wave you thru at the top of bottom of Deer Creek Canyon. If you are stopped, just tell them that you are going to Murphy Gulch Road to get to Mountain Air Ranch, and they will let you through.

The event runs until around 4:30pm.

Slash Collection This Weekend, Saturday August 13

This Saturday, August 13, will be the final slash collection of the year.

The collection in June delivered 23 truck-loads to the collection site. Much appreciation to all who participated.

We do not have nearly as much slash for disposal this time, so we probably will not be working on Sunday.

The loading of trucks and trailers will start Saturday morning and continue until all slash has been removed. (The collection site closes at 3:30PM.) They are accepting tree and shrub limbs up to 6" in diameter and 8' in length; they will not accept trash, construction debris, or tree stumps.

All who participate will be given a free lunch at the Lost Bikini Grill, provided by Mountain Air Ranch.

Road Work on Mica Mine Gulch Road Aug 1-3

On Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, August 1 thru 3, there will be road work on Mica Mine Gulch Road at the intersection of Murphy Gulch Road. This is the beginning of the dirt road that leads into Mountain Air Ranch.

The work will require the road to be closed at times. Workers will be leveling (scraping) the road base, and then laying a new layer of recycled asphalt over the road. This is being done to reduce dust and remove potholes.

Membership Mixer Tomorrow, All Invited

On Openness and Transparency at Mountain Air Ranch

Anyone who is a nudist knows that we don't hide much. But many are surprised to learn that Mountain Air Ranch, as a business, hides very little also. Mountain Air Ranch, Incorporated was setup by James Herndon's Last Will and Testament to run the property in Jefferson County Colorado as a non-profit enterprise to promote nudism. There isn't any owner or owners who benefit from the money that the Ranch receives.

What this means is that Mountain Air Ranch Incorporated is registered with the State of Colorado as a Nonprofit Corporation and its Articles of Incorporation are public information.

It also means that the Corporation is registered as a 501(c)(7) tax-exempt Social Club with the US Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and all of its revenue sources are public information, as can be seen by the 2009 IRS tax filing pictured in this posting.

Other rules that apply to Mountain Air Ranch are that at least 85% of its operating revenue must come from its members' dues and services to members (called the Safe Harbor amount). This means that those yearly dues are about all we have to cover operating costs.

All revenue that Mountain Air Ranch receives is used ONLY to benefit the Ranch and its nudist activities and, with little exception, can't be used anywhere else. The full public filings show that no one, other than employees, is paid by the Corporation and no employee receives more than $50,000 in compensation (in fact, all but one employee is part time). In fact, some of our largest expenses are water for the pool and hot tub, real estate taxes on property appraised at $1.6million, and electricity and natural gas for heating and lights. All members of the Board of Directors and Membership and Entertainment Committees are unpaid volunteers.

Beat the Heat This Week

During this heat wave in Denver, Mountain Air Ranch Family Nudist Resort offers a cool break and only a 40 minute drive from downtown (about 5 miles south of Tiny Town). The current forecast is for Denver to stay in the 90s with high humidity for the next week.

Yesterday (Tuesday) at 3:00pm, when the temperatures in Denver were a humid 94 degrees, the temperature at Mountain Air Ranch was only 82 degrees. The pool was sunny and pleasant. The night time temperatures dropped after a rainstorm at 6pm down to 60 degrees at the Ranch, so staying overnight is really a treat.

Membership Mixer Next Saturday

Internet Improvements at the Ranch

After approval by the Board of Directors in June, an upgrade to the Internet Service at Mountain Air Ranch has been started.

The overall bandwidth for the whole Ranch is being doubled (to 3mbps) and the quality of the service will be improved across the whole Ranch. Members and guests staying in the Lodge rooms will also notice much improved Internet service.

Internet service at the Clubhouse should be considerably better by this weekend, and access from trailers located north of the Lodge will be much better when a new Internet antenna/router is installed on the north side of the Lodge.

Next Weekend's Blowout

This weekend is July 4th and there are many great activities at the Ranch, including a tennis tournament and a dance on Saturday night. Plus the Lost Bikini Grill is open with great food from our new chef, Matthew.

But next weekend will also be very active. There will be a poolside concert on Saturday from 2pm to 6pm sponsored by the Ranch (no cost to attend) featuring the music of the Cruisin' Cats. There will also be a Skinny Dip challenge on Saturday where will see how many we can get into the pool at the same time.

At 3pm on Saturday will be an AANR-sponsored event held simultaneously across North America to see how many hula-hoop participants we can get going. If you own a hula hoop, please bring it along and join in the fun on Saturday, July 9th.

Mountain Air Ranch on video

The video that was recorded at MAR on June 5^th by Brian Spence of Clothes Free International (CFI) is now available to view on their website. Clothes Free International is a subscription service that will require a fee to view or download the video. The video will also be available for any member to view at this coming Saturday (July 2^nd) at the clubhouse or at any other time you see Steve or Connie B (they keep all the CFI videos on their computer).

Another Record Breaking Auction

The auction held yesterday, to raise funds to improve the Clubhouse second floor, raised a record amount of over $17,300. This is the largest amount ever raised in a auction at Mountain Air Ranch.

The proceeds will be used to upgrade the Clubhouse flooring, paint, and possibly some window changes.

All of this was made possible by the generous donations of many, many individuals, both of time and items and in generous bidding. There were also many CASH donations that came in as part of the auction.

The Auction is THIS Saturday, June 25th. We are still looking for donations, particularly dinner certificates. Our new cook, Matthew, has offered to donate a catered dinner for 12 – thank you! But we have no dinner certificates from our members. These are such great sellers...anyone care to donate one? Also, if you don’t have an item to donate we will happily accept a cash donation. An anonymous MAR couple made a $1,000 cash donation last weekend. Amazing!

We also need donations of hors d’oeuvres and wine. We have beer (thanks, nice Mike, Tom and Marilyn) and soda (thank you, Melissa). Let us know if you can provide any refreshments.

The large cable that provides phone and Internet service to Mountain Air Ranch, and to all of the Murphy Gulch area, fell down last night. Due to this, the phone service to the Ranch Office and to the pay phone at the pool, as well as all Internet service, is non-functional today.

Also, the local Verizon network extenders are also connected over the Internet via this service, so your Verizon cell phones won't work either.

It is unclear right now how long it will take to fix the service. It is likely that the outage may run into the weekend.

ClothesFree.com - Newsletter Correction

The most recent Mountain Air Ranch newsletter had an article about the crew of ClothesFree.com producing a new video feature at the Ranch. The crew and about 20 MAR members produced 10 Nudes-In-The-News spots, as well as videoing areas of the Ranch and interviewing several members.

In the latest MAR newsletter, it was incorrectly stated that a copy of the video will be posted (posing was a typo) on the web site, however we cannot post that video due to ownership issues. If you wish to view the video, you can see it on the ClothesFree.com site when it comes out, or come by the Ranch and see a copy in the Clubhouse later this month.

Bicycle Event this Sunday, June 12

Anyone coming to Mountain Air Ranch from the south side of the Denver Metro area should be aware that on Sunday June 12, there will be a bicycle event on Deer Creek Canyon Road. You should expect this event to result in a large number of bikes on this narrow road. The new paved shoulders on Deer Creek Canyon between Chatfield Dam and Philipsburg should help.

The event runs from 8am to 1pm. You should expect heavy bike traffic up to the Philipsburg turnoff, about 1 mile south of Mountain Air Ranch.

Slash Removal Day Next Weekend, June 11 and 12

Twice a year, the local fire department does a slash collection day, which allows Mountain Air Ranch to get rid of a lot of dangerous underbrush and fallen limbs that accumulate every year. With 160 acres to maintain, we generate a lot of limbs and branches that become a fire danger if not disposed of.

Next weekend, we are looking for volunteers to help haul the slash piles away. You can bring just gloves (although work pants, shoes and shirt will be needed when we go offsite to dump). If you have a pickup truck or trailer to help out, that would be wonderful.

"Nudes In The News" Filming at Mountain Air Ranch this Sunday

There will be a gentleman named Brian at MAR this Sunday June 5. Mr. Spence films, and puts online, interviews from nudists around the country. His online interviews are called Nudes in the News.

He will be looking for volunteers from MAR to be interviewed.

Memorial Day Weekend

Memorial Day Weekend is the traditional start to summer activities at Mountain Air Ranch. This weekend is no exception.

The Ranch received a lot of rain over the past 3 weeks, but the forecast for this weekend is for only scattered late-day showers, a typical summer forecast. The hiking trails are drying out now, and the rain has really made the forest come alive. There are a lot of deer on the property now, but they will get more shy as the number of people increase this weekend.

The pool and hot tub are open. The tennis courts, bocce court and shuffleboard court are ready to use.

Last I checked, there was still room available at the Lodge. Two of the reservations for rooms were cancelled when the holders of the reservations received their permanent trailer sites this year, so there may still be a room available if you want one. Call the office at (303)697-4083 to check.

The new cook should have the Lost Bikini Grill open and serving breakfast, lunch and dinner this weekend. There is a dance Saturday night in the Clubhouse, with Rudy's Roadhouse performing. Cost is $14 per person, payable at the office.

Great Turnout for Impromptu Potluck

Even with short notice and having to compete with the U2 concert in Downtown Denver Saturday night, over 40 people showed up for last night's potluck dinner in the Clubhouse.

As usual, more than enough food was available for all who were there, including salads, wine, casseroles, pizza, and too many desserts.

Family Day Was A Great Success

Despite a cold rainy weekend, the Family Day activities went off as planned. Some of the kids of members had a sleep over in the Ranch Lodge on Saturday night. On Sunday there was a group lunch in the Clubhouse, along with activities in the Kids Room and swimming pool. There were other planned events, including the always popular pool coin-toss.

The pool was a balmy 82 degrees with the mist above it joining into the low hanging clouds. There was a forecast of possible snow of Saturday night, but it was limited to a light dusting early Sunday morning that quickly melted.

Tomorrow is World Naked Gardening Day

Saturday will mark the sixth annual World Naked Gardening Day, sponsored by the American Association for Nude Recreation.

Gardening enthusiasts who wish to be at one with nature can do so on the day, joined by thousands of others with the same mindset.

With our recent heavy rain and sunny skies now appearing, the flowers will start blooming all over, including the wildflowers along the hiking paths at Mountain Air Ranch.

Good Day For the Sauna

Its a little bit snowy and cold at the Ranch today. However, the pool is 82 degrees, the hot tub is 104 degrees, the sauna is working and the fireplace has wood.
There's enough water now to green up the hiking trails, and with temperatures returning to the mid 70s by this weekend, we can expect the wildflowers to start appearing.

The Mountain Air Ranch Membership Committee is trying something new this year. Each month, they will sponsor one or two membership mixers. These mixers will replace the previous Newster Booster party for new members.

Family Days Schedule Set for Summer

The Family Days events for this summer are now on the calendar.

We have eight Family Days each summer - One in May; two each in June, July and August, and one in September. Family Days are always on weekends, alternating Saturdays and Sundays. Family Days are an excellent opportunity for kids to play and become friends with other MAR kids.

Each Family Day starts at 11am, and planned activities continue through mid-afternoon. Family Day activities are the joint effort of helpful MAR parents and MAR's Family Coordinator. After the day's planned activities, the kids often make S'Mores.

Pet Policy

In order to assure all members and guests an enjoyable and safe environment at Mountain Air Ranch (MAR), the following rules apply to all pet owners:

Due to our location, MAR is subject to the Animal Control Regulations of Jefferson County. Pet owners are responsible for familiarizing themselves with, and complying with, these regulations. A copy is available in the office.
Any animal bite must be immediately reported to MAR Management. The pet involved will be permanently barred from MAR.
All pets must be leashed and under the owner's control at all times, unless tethered or confined within the boundaries of the tent or RV site. Leashes and tethers may be no more than 10 feet in length.
Pets are not allowed in any buildings, pool/playground, on the ball courts, around the community kitchen and its outdoor eating areas.
The dog run to the west of the Lodge is available as an off-leash area.
All pet feces must be picked up immediately and disposed of in one of the trash dumpster(s) located around the property. Port-o-potties and toilets are never to be used for disposal.
Owners of barking dogs or other noisy animals will be asked to attend to their pets immediately. If the disturbance continues, the owner will be told to remove the offending animal from MAR.
Pet owners who do not follow the above regulations will lost the privilege of bringing pets to MAR. Except for the instance of pet bites, pet owners may petition the membership committee to have this privilege re-instated.

Pool Is Filled and Heating Up

The swimming pool is now fully filled with water and the heater and filter are turned on. As you read this, the temperature of the pool is above 70 degrees already. The final temperature will be between 82 and 84 degrees.

Swimming Pool Opening

The staff at Mountain Air Ranch has started the process of opening the swimming pool for the season.

The winter cover has been removed, but we still need about 18,000 gallons of water added to the pool to get the water level up to the skimmers so that the heater and filter can be started (the pool holds 56,000 gallons). WaterBoy (our water provider) will be starting that process using a 4,000 gallon tanker that will park on the road above the pool.
Due to the dry conditions this winter and spring, the water tanks on the Ranch are very low, and we don't have the reserves we normally have at this time of the year to fill the pool directly from our storage tanks. Those reserves are depleted since we haven't had well water for the showers, toilets, and other non-pool water uses.

New Manager for Mountain Air Ranch

Starting May 1st, we will begin the transition to a new Manager at Mountain Air Ranch. Bob has been our Manager for the past 14+ years and will be retiring next year.

Starting May 1st, Bob will start working with Jim C.,known to some of you as "JJ", although he really prefers to be called "Jim". Jim and Bob will both be working together full time in May, and mostly full time in June, with Bob's days working at the Ranch slowly decreasing over the next 12 months. Bob will mostly work on items like our water system upgrade. Both Jim and Bob will report directly to the Board of Directors.

Jim has experience in project management at a very large electrical contracting firm, plus he ran his own electrical business for many years. He has extensive background in the use of the same office/accounting software that the Ranch currently uses, as well as knowledge of plumbing and carpentry. His past professional work at the Ranch means he already has detailed knowledge of the Ranch infrastructure. Jim also has grown children living in Wyoming that he wants to stay close to.

The really exciting part of this process is that our new Manager will be able to learn the ins and outs of the Ranch from the existing Manger, a nicety that the Ranch really hasn't had in the past.

Getting Ready for Warm Weather

With the temperatures at Mountain Air Ranch in the 70s yesterday, and Bob and Bill getting ready to open the swimming pool for the season, lots of members are starting to get out in the sun again. So, here's some news that might be handy:

Sunscreens:

At just over 7000 feet in elevation, the swimming pool at MAR gets a lot of sun and sunscreen is a good idea. A leading consumer magazine rated sunscreens last year and found that the cheap sunscreens are as good or better than the high priced ones. Prices can vary significantly, with less highly rated ones costing 6 to 20 times more than the best rated ones. Generic brands from Target and Walgreens beat out more expensive brands.

New findings in 2010 by the National Institutes of Health has found that retinyl palmitate (a type of vitamin A put into various creams) causes skin tumors in some people when used in sunscreens and exposed to sunlight. Although products sold in 2011 will start dropping the use of that compound, you might want to avoid those products that still contain it. Retinyl Palmitate was put into creams by manufacturers in hopes of imitating the effects of a prescription skin drug (tretinoin), but research shows that its doesn't do that.

Treating Sunburn:
If you do overdo it, you might get a sunburn. A child under 1 year old with a sunburn should see a doctor immediately. Here's some tips from the folks at the National Institutes of Health (NIH):

The best treatment for sunburn is not to get it. Use a sunscreen, and pay particular attention to children. Excessive alcohol consumption is also associated with sunburn.
If you do get sunburn, the only proven medical treatment for mild sunburn is to take an anti-inflammatory (because sunburn is an inflammation). Ibuprofen (Motrin) and Aspirin are effective anti-inflammatories.
Topical creams with hydro cortisone can relieve pain and reduce inflammation.
Avoid products that numb the skin (lidocaine, benzocaine) since these products may cause you to injure the skin more. Vaseline is not recommended since it holds in the "heat".
Take a cool shower or bath
Although aloe has been found to be effective for sunscreen treatment, only LIVE aloe is effective, which is pretty difficult to get in Colorado.

Keep in mind that the face is the most frequently sunburned area, so make sure to apply sunscreen to your face at least every two hours while in direct sunlight.

Some History on Trailers at Mountain Air Ranch

With the approval of the Ranch's Official Development Plan (ODP) that allowed for 10 additional trailer sites(76 total) and 6 Park Model sites, and legitimized the previous use of trailers on the Ranch, its interesting to look back on the colorful history of trailers at MAR.

Back in 1972, and concluding in 1977, the presence of trailers on Mountain Air Ranch actually led to the Ranch being sued by Jefferson County for illegal trailers on the Ranch. You can read the ruling on this issue here.

Basically, prior to 2010, the Ranch was zoned Agricultural-2 (A-2) which does not allow for trailers or mobile homes. It also does not allow for our operation as a "resort", nudist or otherwise. Luckily for the Ranch, the presence of trailers was tolerated since there weren't any complaints filed. However, the Ranch previous lost a court case for having trailers on the Ranch. Unfortunately, the 1977 case also lost the legal right for the Ranch to operate to serve its members.

This whole situation started when complaints were filed by neighbors to Jefferson County that the Ranch had illegally placed 20 trailers on its property. The court found that only three of the trailers were legal since they were there in 1955, and the other 17 trailers had to be removed. Which is why, prior to last year, trailers were not allowed to be kept permanently on the Ranch (and even that limited use may have been illegal).

Fortunately, over the past several years, the Ranch worked with Jefferson County Planning and Zoning to rectify this situation, and now the Ranch is legally conforming to the Jefferson County requirements allowing us to have RVs and trailers present full time, and to operate as a nudist resort. We are now zoned "planned development", which was first suggested to the Ranch nearly 40 years ago. The Ranch's future is now much more secure.

Also of interest, with our present VERY high fire danger, the new zoning allows us to rebuild in the event of a fire.

Three New Trailer Sites

Last night, the Board of Directors of Mountain Air Ranch approved the addition of three new trailer sites on the property. This is allowed by the rezoning approved last year and covered in the Ranch's Official Development Plan.

The blue markers on the map below show the locations of the new trailer sites.

Bob should be contacting members on the move list and wait list shortly.

The Board also approved the upgrading of electrical service to the three sites on the west side of the Ranch (known as Howard Murphy Hill), provided costs do not exceed a certain threshold.

Great Spring Weather Coming

Its definitely been a milder winter here in the Front Range of Colorado than in many parts of the country. And that mild weather is continuing.

When temperatures get into the 60s in Denver, the poolside at Mountain Air Ranch can be in the 70s when the winds are calm. The next several days (and beyond) are forecast to be in the mid 60s with clear skies. Much nicer than the East Coast rain, snow and floods they will be having at the same time.

The pool is still closed for the winter (about a month to go), but the hot tub and sauna are open, along with the clubhouse with its pool table, table tennis, pinball, TV and music.

Also, the snow is gone from the paddle tennis courts and the bocce court. There is still a bit of snow on the shady areas of the hiking trails, but they are definitely hikeable now.

Hot Tub Repaired

The heater on the hot tub at the Ranch started leaking last week and had to be replaced. Unfortunately, this cost over $2000, but it is working again.

The hot tub now uses bromine and has been since early last summer(there was a short attempt to use chlorine in the hot tub but it damaged the equipment). Bromine is more stable than chlorine at high temperatures and less likely to cause rashes. Previously (for many years) the Ranch used hydrogen peroxide for sanitation in the hot tub, but due to Homeland Security regulations, it is becoming impossible to purchase the 30% H2O3 needed, so a switch was required.

Another thing I learned from Bob is that bromine is considerably cheaper than hydrogen peroxide, which was costing as much as $600 every 5 to 10 days in the summer.

Also, there is an Ultraviolet sterilizer in the pump system.

Rumors that the Ranch is replacing the hot tub are not true.

Park Model Site Meeting - March 12, 2011

There will be a meeting for anyone interested in a Park Model site at Mountain Air Ranch on March 12th, at 2pm in the MAR Clubhouse. The Ranch management and Board of Directors will be available to present ideas and hear input from interested members on placing Park Models on the Ranch property.

You may be aware that the ODP as a result of rezoning of the Mountain Air Ranch property to Planned Development allows for 10 additional seasonal trailer sites, and 6 Park Model sites. An update (from what I have learned in the past few weeks): Park Models are generally mobile and are CDOT licensed like an RV or travel trailer, do not exceed 400 sq feet of living space, and have water, sewer and metered electric hookups that aren't permanent. They are not intended to be year-round living spaces. They can be towed just like a travel trailer if less than 8 feet wide, but if wider than 8 feet they require a special permit to be moved (think "Wide Load" objects you see on the roadways).

The meeting will present ideas discussed so far on locations, development costs and rents, and to get input from interested members on the level of interest for these units.

This past weekend, the temperatures on the pool deck got above 70 degrees, and those temperatures have persisted the past few days. Tomorrow will also be sunny and warm. Sunday morning, enough folks showed up to enjoy the sunshine that we had to shovel the rapidly melting snow to make more room for lounge chairs to be pulled out. More than 20 people showed up on Sunday.

This is Rocky Mountain weather for you who don't live here. We have temperature swings each day of 40 degrees or more, with daytime being warm enough in winter to go nude, and nighttime cool enough to sleep soundly under a warm comforter.

If you want the latest weather for MAR, you can go to this site on WeatherUnderground which is the closest weather station to the Ranch. Keep in mind that the poolside temperatures at MAR are about 10 degrees higher.

What To Do When Its Cold

OK, I admit it, today is cold!!!! Its not supposed to be above zero today, but last weekend saw temperatures on the pool deck around 70 degrees, and sunbathers all around.

Still, the hot tub is open and heated to 104degrees, and the sauna is there too. The upstairs at the Clubhouse still has a FREE pinball machine, pool table, and table tennis. There is satellite TV by the fireplace with lots of firewood, and (as Bob calls it) a "High tech jukebox" with surround sound and 19inch touchscreen controls (for you gear-heads out there: its a Ubuntu 10.04 system wtih 19in ELO Touchscreen monitor, with Rhythmbox for iPod interface, tied into a Panasonic Receiver with 5 speaker locations and 12 speakers). A microwave is available for popcorn or other items.

Other lucky members of Mountain Air Ranch are departing in two weeks for a ten-day cruise in the Caribbean. I only mention this because there are more than 20 members that I know of going on this cruise (unfortunately I will not be among them).

A Warm Spell in January

This picture was taken yesterday, January 14, 2011 outside the Sauna/Shower Building.

While the East Coast shivers and shovels out of the snow that visited the Denver area last weekend, Mountain Air Ranch enjoyed pleasant weather yesterday with temperatures on the pool deck in the 60s. The temperature at the office/gatehouse was only 44 degrees, but the placement of the pool allows for it to be much warmer than surrounding areas.

The swimming pool is closed for the winter, but the hot tub and sauna are open and available.

Temperatures this weekend are supposed to be even warmer than yesterday.

How to Feed Breakfast to 50 people for $4 a head

So, here are our notes on planning New Years Day Breakfast for 50 or more people, while keeping the costs low (about $4 per person). This is what we will serve this Saturday morning. The menu and quantities are based on experience from the past two New Year's breakfasts.

The Menu

Freshly Made Egg Casseroles (Sausage, Ham and Vegetarian)
Fresh baked Cinnamon Rolls
Fresh Fruit (Pineapple, bananas, blueberries, raspberries)
Yogurt
Toast
Bloody Mary's
Mimosas
Coffee (Reg and Decaf)
Orange Juice

The Egg Casserole Recipe (Connie's Electric Skillet Eggs)
6 eggs
1/3 cup milk
1/2 t. dry parsley
1/4 t. salt
6 oz sausage or ham or spinach/feta-cheese
1 1/2 cups frozen cubed hash browns, thawed
1/4 cup chopped onions
1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Mix eggs, milk, parsley and salt. Set aside. Cook sausage until no longer pink. Remove and drain. In same skillet, cook potatoes&onions for 5-7 minutes. Return sausage. Add egg mixture & stir until almost set. Sprinkle with cheese. Cover and cook for 1-2 minutes, until cheese is melted. Serves 4. Double this recipe and repeat 6 times during the morning, starting at 8am (breakfast is at 9am).

Bloody Mary Recipe
1 46oz can tomato juice
2/3 cup lemon juice
3 cups vodka
1 Tbsp horseradish
1 Tbsp tabasco
2 tsp Worcestershire

Add celery sticks, lemon and lime sections for garnish.

6 doz. eggs
1/2 gal milk
18 cups of frozen hash browns, cubed not shredded
2 lbs sausage
2 lbs ham
12 cups of cheese
5 doz Rhodes cinnamon rolls, frozen, uncooked
3 cups onion
large bag of fresh spinach leaves, washed
1 large package feta cheese
1 box yogurt (18 per box) at Costco
2 gals. Orange Juice
1 1.75liter bottle vodka (cheap stuff works, since it goes in tomato juice)
bottle of champagne for mimosas (probably a bottle left over from New Year's eve party)
2 cans tomato juice (46 oz)
2 boxes lemon juice (in freezer section)
celery (one bunch)
1 small bottle tobasco
1 bottle refrigerated horseradish
1 bottle dry parsley
small amount of vegetable oil
1 large pineapple
2-4 lbs berries,assorted
2 bunches of bananas
6 aluminum 9x13 disposable pans for cinnamon rolls
jelly
butter for toast

coffee, enough to make at least 2 large urns
coffee creamer
sugar
sweet&low
hot chocolate

forks, knives, spoons, plates, napkins, cups, salt, pepper

3 electric skillets to cook in continuously.

After midnight, spray aluminum pans with PAM, take out all frozen cinnamon rolls and place in pans. Take a piece of plastic as large as pan, spray plastic with PAM and cover cinnamon rolls and let rise about 5 hours. Cook as package directs.

Unbelievably Nice Weather at the Ranch

Today, the weather at Mountain Air Ranch was far better than the weather at Haulover nudist beach in Miami. The high temperature poolside at Mountain Air Ranch Family Nudist Resort was 77 degrees with no clouds at all. Miami was only 70 degrees, windy with partly cloudy skies. More than 50 people decided to enjoy a wonderful day sunning and swimming in the pool.

The weather tomorrow is supposed to be a repeat of today, with clear sunny skies and temperatures in the high 70s.

Thanksgiving Dinner and Dance

Halloween Dance

Whereas, the Corporation originally was incorporated on July 11, 1960 under the "Mountain Air Ranch", pursuant to C.R.S. 7-40-101 et seq.; and
Whereas, on June 8, 1988, the Corporation filed its statement of election to be governed by the Colorado Nonprofit Corporation Act (C.R.S. Title 7, Articles 20-29); and
Whereas, the Corporation desires to change its name, to change its registered office and agent, and to make certain other amendments to its Articles of Incorporation; and
Whereas, there being no members of the Corporation, such amendments were adopted by the affirmative vote of a majority of the Corporation's directors in office at a meeting of the Board of Directors duly called and held on May 28, 1988.
Now, THEREFORE, The Corporation hereby adopts the following Amended and Restated Articles of Incorporation, which (i) contain amendments, (ii) correctly set forth the provisions of the Corporation's Articles of Incorporation, as amended, (iii) have been duly adopted as required by law, and (iv) supersede the Corporation's original Articles of Incorporation and all amendments and supplements thereto.

Article I
NAME
The name of the Corporation shall be Mountain Air Ranch, Incorporated. The Corporation shall be deemed organized not-for-profit under the Colorado Nonprofit Corporation Act.

Article II
DURATION
The Corporation shall have perpetual existence.

Article III
PURPOSES
The primary purpose of the Corporation is to foster and perpetuate the club and resort which is operated within the Corporation's real property which is located in the County of Jefferson and State of Colorado. This club is known as "Mountain Air Ranch Club" "Mountain Air Ranch", and "MAR". This club is a chartered club of the American Sunbathing Association, Inc.
The Corporation is also organized for the purpose of transacting all other lawful business for which a corporation may be incorporated under the Colorado Nonprofit Corporation Act.

Article IV
POWERS
In furtherance of the purposes set forth above, the Corporation shall have and may exercise any and all of the rights, powers and privileges now or hereafter conferred upon corporations organized under the Colorado Nonprofit Corporation Act and not forbidden by these Articles of Incorporation or the Bylaws of the Corporation.

Article V
PLACE OF BUSINESS
The principal office and place of business of the Corporation shall be determined by the Board of Directors from time to time. The initial principal place of business of the Corporation shall be located at 8796 S. Mica Mine Gulch Road, Littleton, Colorado.

Article VI
REGISTERED OFFICE AND AGENT
The address of the Corporation's registered office in Colorado shall be:

MEMBERS AND SHAREHOLDERS
The Corporation shall have no members. The Corporation shall have neither shareholders or shares of stock.

Article X
CONFLICT OF INTEREST
No contract or other transaction between the Corporation and one or more of its directors, or between the Corporation and any other corporation, firm, association, or entity in which one or more of its directors are directors or officers or are financially interested, shall be either void or voidable solely because of such relationship or interest or solely because such directors are present at the meeting of the Board of Directors or a committee thereof which authorizes, approves, or ratifies such contract or transaction or solely because his or their votes counted for such purpose if:
(a) The material facts of such relationship or interest is disclosed or known to the Board of Directors or committee which authorizes, approves, or ratifies the contract or transaction by a vote or consent sufficient for the purposes without counting the votes or consents of such interested directors; or
(b) The contract or transaction is fair and reasonable to the Corporation at the time of approval by the Board of Directors.
Common or interested directors may be counted in determining the presence of a quorum at a meeting of the Board of Directors or a committee thereof which authorizes, approves, or ratifies such contract or transactions.

Article XI
INDEMNIFICATION AND INSURANCE
If so provided in the Corporation's Bylaws, notwithstanding any conflicts of interest with respect to the transaction, to the fullest extent permitted by law or to the extent provided in the Bylaws (whichever is less), the Corporation shall have the right (i) to indemnify its directors, officers, employees, and agents against any claim, liability or expense incurred in connection with such individuals' association with the Corporation, and (ii) to provide insurance against any such claims, liabilities and expenses at the Corporation's expense.

Article XII
LIMITATION OF LIABILITY
A director of the Corporation shall not be personally liable to the Corporation for monetary damages for breach of fiduciary duty as a director, except for liability (i) for any breach of the director's duty of loyalty to the Corporation, (ii) for acts or omissions not in good faith or which involve intentional misconduct or knowing violation of law, (iii) for a breach of C.R.S. 7-24-111, or (iv) for any transaction from which the director derived an improper personal benefit.

Article XIII
LIQUIDATION
Upon dissolution and liquidation of the Corporation, except as otherwise provided in Article 26 of the Colorado Nonprofit Corporation Act, and Article I of the Bylaws the assets of the Corporation will be distributed at the discretion of the Board of Directors.

for the purpose of becoming a body politic and corporation organized not for profit under the Laws of the State of Colorado, and in accordance with said law we do hereby make, acknowledge these articles in writing of our intention to become a body corporate under the laws and by virtue of the laws of the State of Colorado.

FIRST: The name of the corporation is MOUNTAIN AIR RANCH
SECOND: The period of its duration is perpetual.

(c) The purposes of this organization are for the purposes of developing and fostering and promoting a healthy mind and spirit in a healthy body; to support wholesome exposure to sunlight and air, which are vital to the human life and well being, to include as members only persons with good moral character of all ages and sexes, but no person with a political philosophy alias to that of the United States of America to become or remain a member of the organization.
(d) TO make and enforce contracts in relation to the organization's business, powers and objects, to sue and be sued, to borrow money, to adopt and alter by-laws, to amend its Articles of Incorporation, to consolidate or merge with any other corporation. To exercise every right and privilege necessary, incident or appertaining to the business, objects and purposes of the organization. To secure the company's power to borrow money by executing mortgages, notes, deeds of trust, debentures, to borrow such money for any purpose of the corporation. To draw, make, accept, endorse, discount, execute, issue, sell, pledge or otherwise dispose of promissory notes, drafts, bills of exchange, warrants, bonds, debentures and other negotiable or non-negotiable, transferrable and non-transferrable instruments and expence of indebtedness, and to secure the payment thereof and the interest thereby by mortgages or pledge, conveyance or assignment in trust of the whole or any part of the property of the corporation at the time owned or thereafter acquired.

FOURTH: MANAGEMENT
The management of said not for profit company shalll be under the control of a Board of Directors, which shall consist of not less than three or more than seven. Mountain Air Ranch Rezoning Approved

On Tuesday, October 12, 2010, the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners approved the final conditions of the rezoning of the Ranch from Agricultural to Planned Development. This change in rezoning now allows the Ranch to move forward with major improvements, such as new bathrooms. Also, in the case of fire or other catastrophe, we can now rebuild our existing facilities.

Under our past zoning, a major remodel of the bathrooms was prohibited since we would not have been able to get a building permit. We the new zoning, this is no longer a problem.

This has been a tedious task with Ron E. Bob W., and Kathy W. as well as many others putting in many, many hours of work on getting all the information gathered and forms completed. The whole process started over two years ago.

Congratulations to our Board of Directors for making this important contribution to the future enjoyment of Mountain Air Ranch Family Nudist Resort.

Pool and Hot Tub Still Open

Tuesday the high in Denver only reached 68 degrees, which made it the coolest day in over 2 months. Then the temperature climbed back into the 80s for most of the week. This weekend, the Ranch should see temperatures only in the 70s.

But the swimming pool is still open and a pleasant 84 degrees. The pool will probably remain open until after Thanksgiving weekend. The hot tub is a warm 104 degrees and open all year.

Skinny Dip World Record Results are In

Back in July, coinciding with the end of our celebration of the 75th Anniversary of Mountain Air Ranch, the AANR held the second annual AANR World Record Skinny Dip. Mountaiin Air Ranch was able to provide a photo for this event showing 197 people all in the Ranch pool. We were in the top 10 percent of all participating clubs in total attendance (21st out of 127 clubs). At 7,000 foot elevation on the pool deck, we were probably the loftiest club participating.

Overall, the AANR World Record Skinny Dip set a NEW RECORD OF 14,110 simultaneous skinny dippers all across North America.

A VERY warm, sunny weekend

The 40+ people around the pool this last Saturday got a lesson in Colorado weather, with temperatures at the Ranch in the mid-to-upper 80s, while Denver was drizzly and cool. The weather was sunny all day, although humidity was high. Members driving up US-285 to the Ranch Saturday morning saw the weather change from overcast and dreary, to clear and warm once they got above 6500feet in elevation.

The weather Sunday was every warmer and just as sunny, with both Indian Hills and Denver setting record high temperatures (96 in Denver). Today is supposed to be another record warm day with no clouds in the sky.

The pool is open until after Thanksgiving and the hot tub and sauna are open year round. The pool is crystal clear right now, due to lower use after Labor Day and reduced amount of sunscreen that needs to be filtered out.

Keep in mind that rainfall has been lacking for the last month, so the drive up Mica Mine Gulch Road is pretty dusty right now.
